Step 4: Meditate on the Word of God

Carrying on with the look at getting revelation from the word of God – this time we look at meditating on the Word of God.

To meditate on the Word of God doesn’t mean to sit there with your legs crossed, make circles out of your finger and thumb and hum quietly.

The word “meditate” means to mutter, to ponder – it is literally to talk to yourself whilst pondering. I think that this is one of the most productive things that you can do with the Word of God.

I call meditating on the Word to prayerfully dream. I will read a Scripture to myself and then close my eyes and ask the Spirit of God to show me what’s going on. So, if I am reading about Jesus, I picture where He is at, I even try to smell the air. The Word begins to become alive.

I sometimes hear Sharon talking to herself – but that’s OK. She is meditating on the Word – she is muttering and murmuring it to herself. Whilst preaching it to herself, revelation comes.

Some of the greatest revelations that I have had have come when preaching. Many preachers will tell you this. I don’t know who gets blessed more when I preach – the congregation or me! Why is this so? Because when I preach, I am literally meditating on the Scripture. The Holy Spirit starts to talk then, and I just sit back and enjoy!

You can meditate too. You don’t need to be standing in front of a large congregation, but you can begin at home, or in the car. If you are concerned that people will hear you, then shut the door and talk quietly. Take a verse and firstly try emphasising different parts of the verse. For example, Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Now say that verse out aloud. Say out loud what I have written below and emphasise the parts that I have.

  • I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
  • I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
  • I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
  • I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
    Etc. etc.

Once you have emphasised each word in the sentence by speaking the sentence out aloud, try the next stage. When you emphasis a word in the sentence – explain that word., for example:

I can do… I – that means me. I am the subject of that sentence. This is personal to me, the I is me…etc.

I can do…can – not maybe, not might, not won’t but CAN. This word holds no negativism about it. It is very positive it leaves no room for failure. Can is the strongest word that can be used to describe me doing something. It holds the same meaning of “I shall” or “I will”…etc

You have begun to preach to yourself. You have begun to meditate on the Word of God: good isn’t it?

Before you know it, you’ll have spent an hour preaching to yourself on that one verse, and you’ll be a shouting Christian by the time you have finished! Your faith will begin to soar, your spirit will start to jump because it is being feed. You’ll start off quite, but by the time you have finished – you’ll be shouting from the roof.

You can understand why people thought that I was odd when I told them that I would do these things – you may even be thinking this yourself – but try it! You will have the most wonderful times with your God! When I was at university and I started to find these things out for myself, I would walk home from the university. It would take about 45 minutes – a perfect time period for a sermon! I would take out my Bible, and turn to a Scripture as the Lord would lead. I would then do what I explained above and would take the verse apart piece by piece.

I would explain the meaning of words, cross reference it to other Scriptures that I knew that mentioned the same thing – I was walking and preaching! People around me thought I was nuts, but I didn’t care what they thought! Sometimes I’d get really excited and shout and do a little dance. People on the bus would look at me like Iwas crazy as it went by. But I enjoyed myself – and more importantly, I learned some very fundamental truths in my life doing that!

I would start to get excited about the Word, I began to preach to the wardrobe, or the cat which ever would stay still long enough to hear what I had to say.

Now I am not saying that you have to do exactly what I did – but you do need to meditate on the Word of God (Joshua 1:8). It is a Scriptural principal. It is what turns head knowledge into heart knowledge. It is the food that your spirit man needs!

I cannot emphasise this principal to you enough. If I am counselling with people that are having a hard time, I will generally hand them a Bible and ask them to preach to me. I tell them to do what I explained above, and give them a Scripture relevant to their situation. Why? Because they need to meditate on the Word, and have the Word come alive to them. When the Word of God becomes alive and not just ink on a piece of paper it becomes what the Greeks call the Rhema Word of God. And Romans 10:17 says that faith comes by hearing the Rhema Word of God.

When that Rhema comes, when life and revelation hit them, faith comes. When faith comes, victory follows. There is a new spring in your step. Joy comes and depression lifts. Anxiety is replaced with hope and peace. Sadness is replaced with a smile. That is why I will hand people a Bible, I will give them Scriptures to read, and to study.

The funny thing is – this works like nothing else that I have ever seen. It is the surest way to get healed, to get out of debt, to break sin habits, to become effective in your witness etc. It gets rid of the stalemate that can so easily come in our Christian walk.

Preach to yourself. Meditate on the Word. Allow the joy and excitement that comes from the Rhema to come and fill your heart. I pray that you will!
