Mark 5:23 – Part 4: My Jesus

There is a person we need to look at in this story that we haven’t paid too much attention too recently, and that is Jesus. My Jesus.

It got to the point in my life where I realised I was the person who needed the miracle. I needed them pretty much most of the time. When I began to spiritually grow up, there was something in my heart that stirred me. I no longer wanted to be Jairus all the time, going from miracle to miracle (although that is great, don’t misunderstand me), I wanted to be the man that Jairus came too.

Before you cry heresy, let me explain what I mean.

Mark 5:23 – Part 3: Faith v Mental Knowledge

…saying, “My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.”

Have you ever heard somebody say, “I had all the faith in the world, but it still didn’t happen!”?

I have.

Said it once a twice myself in the past. I have made many mistakes about the subject of faith throughout my life – on both extremes. At one time, I thought that faith was a condition that I could work up if I concentrated enough on believing God. Then when things didn’t happen – I would think, man I had faith, what’s going on?

Remember – the internet is international

This morning I was reading a Shel Israel’s blog – My 5 secrets meme. For me – it was point number 5 that sprung out to me:

5. I don’t care for American football.

My guess is that Shel is actually in the US given the spelling on his site, and the thing that stood out to me was the term “American Football”.

Last night I was reading a friend’s blog (interesting how communication in a Web 2.0 world is about reading your friend’s blog) who discovered that he had a fan for his music site in Eastern Europe.

I know it is an obvious statement – but the world is now an international world. I don’t know if Shel wrote “American Football” for the sake his international readers – but it highlights a great point – you may have to remember your international readers whilst writing.

Being English (and therefore still thinking that we have an Empire) I appreciate the distinction between the terms “American football” and “football”.

Thanks to my frequent visits to the US, I have become a fan of “American Football” but could never understand why the term “football” was used. I could ramble on for hours about this – but, from both an American Football fan (go Panthers go) and a football fan (Liverpool FC – you’ll never walk alone) — thanks Shel for using the correct terminology for the sake of your international readers.

Given that there is so much competing for my attention – it is the little things that keep me interested!

You still have to take a risk with your website

Here’s the thing – you have planned out your website. You have your hopes. Your ideas. But, if you’re new to the game – you cannot be sure at all about how it will go.

So we do some research using tools like Wordtracker to see what kind of traffic you might get. You could sign up to Google Adwords and use their keyword tool to try and figure out how much traffic you can buy.

But honestly – you won’t know until you bite the bullet and launch the site. And once you have launched your ecommerce site – things don’t stop there. You have the tweaks and the testing to do.

We launched one site and got our first order in a few hours. Another order the next day and a few more the day after that. It wasn’t a spectacular beginning and we were expecting. So we spent a few days playing on Adwords testing different ads and offers on the website – and within a few short weeks – the site was doing great. It was doing so well that it beat all of our estimations and ideas.

So, we thought we had the “magic formula” after spending a while analysing the site and what we thought we the key factors to its success.

So we launched another site – using those principles. And that site started the same way – but stayed there. It did a few orders a day. Not massive amounts of business – enough to pay back the initial investment and start turning a profit in 12 months – but nothing like the first site.

Now we sit around and think why. Maybe some of our “Magic formula” didn’t work. It caused us to put our third site on hold for a little while whilst we thought about it.

But you know what – as experienced as we are I am sure about this one thing – you can research and plan, hypothesise and generate success principles – but you can’t predict the success of a website. For that – the proof, as they say, is in the eating.

I was naïve enough to think that the internet could remove what has been the backbone of entrepreneurialism for centuries – namely risk. If I can predict the future – I remove risk. But market research, Wordtracker and Adwords cannot give you the future. They can look at the past and give you an idea – but they cannot tell you what the future holds.

We shouldn’t shy away from risk. Sure we should minimise it. Don’t be reckless. Research and plan. Listen to those who have experience and successful websites. These are prudent things to do. But just because this is the internet and we can measure a lot more doesn’t mean that we can predict the future. Ultimately you have to believe that you can make a success of what you do and be willing to work at it until you do.

The internet doesn’t give us an “easy” ride – just a different one. You still have to think like and entrepreneur. You still have to be willing to take a risk.

Mark 5:23 – Part 2: Dealing with problems

I have had the devil rob other things from me, but nothing like this. Jairus is a man who I respect, and I truly look forward to meeting him in Glory. I admire this man. I have thought about him many times, especially when going through the hard spots. You see problems can be very inward looking, almost selfish. “No-one can understand how I feel…” is something often said – because we become very self focused in the hard spots. In fact, I am sure you will never find out what a man is truly like until you see him in a hard spot.

Mark 5:23 – Part 1: When things go from bad to worse

and begged Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.”

Matt 9:18  …“My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.”

Dead or Nearly Dead?
I want to address the state of this little girl. You could read these Scriptures in two different ways – the girl was alive and just about to die, or the girl had died. What I think happened was the young girl had just died when Jairus set off – hence the expression, point of death. This meant that she had just entered the gates of death.

Mark 5:22 – Part 2: Worship & Faith

The Spirit of God said “Behold”. Pay attention to the fact that this man is doing something different, he is not being passive. He is being active. His faith led to action. He presses through and the first thing he does when he arrives is create a space for himself and fall at Jesus’ feet.

Mark 5:22 – Part 1: Being single-minded

And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name.
And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet

Matt 9:18
While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him…

Luke 8:14
And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was the ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus’ feet…

To Behold
“Behold” This is the one word that is used in all three Gospel accounts of this event. It literally means to call your attention to. All three Gospel writers are calling your attention to something – in this case to a person called Jairus.

The way that my teachers used to say this was, pay attention. There was something specific that I needed to learn, and the Bible wants us to pay attention to Jairus.

Mark 5:21 – Part 2: Give people what they want

…the crowd received and welcomed Him gladly, for they were all waiting and looking for Him.(Luke 8:40 – The Amplified)

How did Jesus get a large crowd of people to deliberately search Him out? I mean these people went out of their way to see Jesus. Why?

Simple. He gave them what they wanted.
